March is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month. Throughout the month, I'll share art about or related to MS (especially living with it). Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, and it's currently incurable. To help you learn the basic information about MS, I've used Google and am quoting or paraphrasing information from my searches, along with my own metaphor and explanation. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. In this disease, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath or the cells that produce and maintain it. The attack causes swelling, also known as inflammation, and injury to the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is a protective layer wrapped around the main "body" of neurons in the brain. Using the metaphor of an electric wire, the energy flows through it and there's a layer of flexible rubber wrapped around it. If that layer gets damaged, the wire might not function properly. Myelin is the protective coating for axon of the neuron, which is the "cable" electrical impulses travel through in the neurons, and damage to myelin can lead to nerve impulses being slow or even stopping. This can cause a wide range of neurological symptoms, and can result in serious disability for patients over time.
